ECMWF Summer of Weather Code 2022 – A year full of Earth Science Innovations

The fifth edition of ECMWF Summer of Weather Code (ESoWC 2022) ended with a final event where the six teams that worked on innovative technology solutions presented their results.

The Final ESoWC Day was hosted on 28 September 2022 at the new ECMWF centre in Bonn, Germany, and was also streamed on the programme’s main channels (webpage, YouTube and Twitter).

The event started with a short welcome from Julia Wagemann and Esperanza Cuartero, Programme managers of ECMWF Summer of Weather Code, and Jörn Hoffmann, Destination Earth Partnership Lead at ECMWF, who thanked the teams for their work on this year’s challenges. Throughout the day, each team introduced their project and presented their work. After each presentation, the teams answered various questions from the audience and interacted with the other teams. A ceremony took place at the end of the day, and all teams received their certificates for this year’s edition of ESoWC.

We at COMMpla are incredibly proud to be a communications partner in the ESoWC programme since 2019, helping to build this unique community through the content we create and the events we support. For this edition of ESoWC, we produced and promoted content such as videos, blog posts, social media posts and newsletters, and were also the co-organisers of the final event.

We are looking forward to the future of this programme as we believe that creating a platform where open-source developers can experiment with new technologies and learn more about our planet’s climates is a fantastic opportunity for them – to have a life-changing experience – and for the ECMWF community – for whom they are developing cutting-edge technologies.
