Code for Earth 2023: Showcasing Innovative Open-Source Software Solutions for our Planet
The fifth edition of Code for Earth (formerly European Summer of Weather Code, ESoWC), held in Bologna (Italy) on 20 September 2023, ended with a final event where the ten teams of young coders working on innovative technology solutions in weather and climate research presented their results.
Code for Earth is an initiative by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) that began in 2018. Its primary goal is to promote Earth science innovation, focusing on weather, climate, and atmospheric developments. The programme supports projects related to ECMWF, Copernicus and Destination Earth (DestinE). Since its inception, 46 open-source software tools have been developed, benefiting ECMWF and its partners. Every summer, participants from diverse backgrounds collaborate to create open-source software solutions, receiving mentorship from ECMWF experts and a stipend upon completion. These projects span various domains, including data science, visualisation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The 2023 edition saw ten developer teams working on innovative projects, showcasing their results at the September Final Code for Earth Day.
COMMpla is proud to be a communications partner in the Code for Earth programme since 2019, helping to build this unique community through the content we create and the events we support. For this edition of Code for Earth, COMMpla produced and promoted content such as videos, blog posts, social media posts and newsletters and organised dedicated webinars presenting the various teams joining the challenges. Moreover, COMMpla helped organise the final event, designing the rollup banner, personalised giveaways and covering its main highlights on multiple social media platforms.
We are looking forward to the future of this programme as we believe that creating a platform where open-source developers can experiment with new technologies and learn more about our planet’s climates is a fantastic opportunity for them – to have a life-changing experience – and for the ECMWF community – for whom they are developing cutting-edge technologies.
