The Connection Between Accessibility and UX
Accessibility and UX are often discussed as if they belong to different teams. Accessibility gets handed to a compliance checklist near the end of a project, while UX gets the workshops, personas and usability testing. In practice, this separation doesn’t hold up. Both disciplines exist to answer the same question: can someone complete their task efficiently, comfortably, and with confidence?
When accessibility is treated as a requirement rather than a design principle, it tends to arrive too late to make a meaningful difference. A form gets relabeled after launch, or a colour gets swapped after an audit, but the overall experience doesn’t really improve. When accessibility is considered from the outset, something different happens: the product becomes easier to use for everyone, not only for users who rely on assistive technologies.
Accessibility goes beyond disability
Accessibility is about removing barriers that prevent people from using a product. While it is often associated with permanent disabilities, the reality is broader. People can also experience temporary or situational limitations that affect how they interact with technology.
Someone recovering from eye surgery, using one hand because of an injury, reading a screen in bright sunlight or trying to navigate a website on a crowded train may face many of the same challenges. These examples show why accessibility is not a niche concern: most people experience situations where a more inclusive design makes technology easier to use.
This principle is reflected in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), which provide recommendations for making digital content more accessible and usable.
Why accessibility is good UX
Once you start looking at interfaces through this lens, the overlap between accessibility and good UX becomes difficult to ignore.
Readable typography, sufficient colour contrast and a logical page structure reduce effort and make content easier to understand. Clear form labels and descriptive buttons remove uncertainty, while predictable navigation helps users build a mental model of a website.
The same applies to keyboard navigation. It is essential for many users of assistive technologies, but it also benefits power users and anyone temporarily unable to use a mouse. Larger touch targets, simple language and meaningful error messages work in the same way: they remove friction for everyone.
These are not accessibility features added on top of a design. They are simply characteristics of a well-designed interface.
Better experiences, better outcomes
Since accessibility and usability are closely connected, the business case for accessibility often looks very similar to the business case for good UX.
Interfaces that are easier to navigate and understand tend to reduce abandonment, particularly in areas such as sign-up, booking and checkout flows. Clearer experiences also generate fewer support requests, as users are more likely to understand what went wrong and how to solve problems independently.
Accessible products can also reach a wider audience, including older users, people with temporary impairments, and users relying on older devices or slower connections. Well-structured content and semantic HTML can also support search engine optimisation by helping systems better understand page content.
Perhaps most importantly, accessible products feel more trustworthy. Users may not consciously notice good accessibility, but they quickly recognise when a digital experience is confusing or unnecessarily difficult.
Common mistakes that affect everyone
Many accessibility issues are also UX issues. Some of the most common examples include relying on colour alone to communicate information, replacing labels with placeholder text, removing visible keyboard focus indicators, using vague link text such as “Click here”, creating buttons that are too small for comfortable touch interaction, or displaying generic error messages that provide no clear solution.
In each case, the accessibility failure and the UX failure are often the same problem, simply viewed from two different perspectives.
Making accessibility part of the process
Accessibility works best when it is considered from day one rather than treated as a final QA exercise.
Thinking about structure during wireframing, designing accessible components, testing interfaces using only a keyboard and validating experiences with real users all help identify barriers early, when they are much easier to address.
One recommendation: try completing your own website without using a mouse. It only takes a few minutes, but it can quickly reveal problems that are easy to overlook during a visual review.
Accessibility is not an additional feature layered onto a finished product, nor is it simply a compliance checkbox. It is one of the foundations of good user experience. Designing for the widest realistic range of people from the outset does not only support users with disabilities, it creates digital products that are clearer, more intuitive and more effective for everyone.
